Webinar Series – Teaching Mathematics in the Current School Context

This series of webinars explore approaches to teaching and learning in the current context. Full recordings of each webinar and links to the accompanying resources are available.

Webinar 1: Blended Teaching & Learning

Webinar 1

Webinar 1

The first webinar explored approaches to teaching Mathematics to support student learning in a blended learning environment and included input from a panel of practising Maths teachers who have experience of implementing such approaches. The panelists were Aidan Roche (Coláiste Bríde SS, Enniscorthy), Joe Geraghty (St Gerald’s DLS College, Castlebar) and Yvonne Marley (Old Bawn CS, Dublin).

A padlet of blended learning resources was also made available to download.
Webinar 2: Remote Teaching & Learning

Webinar 2

Webinar 2

The second webinar considered key elements for effective remote teaching and provided some examples of these in practice. Participants had the chance to ask questions of PDST advisors and these were answered live.

A padlet of remote teaching resources was also made available to download.

Webinar 3: Using GeoGebra to Support Blended Learning in Mathematics

Webinar 3

Webinar 3

The third webinar explored the use of GeoGebra to support students in developing a deeper understanding of Mathematical concepts and students taking greater responsibility for their learning. The value of rich Mathematical tasks, supported by the use of formative assessment techniques, was highlighted using examples from the Geometry strand.

A padlet of remote teaching resources was also made available to download.

Teaching Geometry for Understand Part 3: Coordinate Geometry

This online interactive workshop adopted an integrated approach to teaching coordinate geometry. The workshop explored ways in which students’ geometric thinking could be developed by using rich tasks to combine coordinate geometry, synthetic geometry and trigonometry.

Digital geoboards were used in the workshop as an alternative to the physical manipulative.

Complex Numbers – Making Connections across Different Strands of Mathematics

This online interactive workshop investigated a constructivist approach to the teaching of Complex Numbers and explored the geometric view of Number to support making connections and sense making for our students.

An overview of a student exploration of multiplication of real numbers.

Supporting GeoGebra Files.

This GeoGebra file investigates the effect of multiplication of Complex Numbers of the form z=ai. This GeoGebra file investigates the effect of multiplication of Complex Numbers of the form z=a+bi. This file investigates raising a complex number to an exponent leading to DeMoivre’s Theorem.
