Jeremy Hodgen is professor of mathematics education at University College London Institute of Education and a member of the Royal Society. His research interests include mathematics education, teacher education, assessment, international comparisons and standards over time. Prior to his academic career Jeremy taught mathematics in primary and secondary schools in London.

Prof. Hodgen’s keynote address will focus on his recently published research which evaluates the impact of various teaching approaches and factors on student attainment in mathematics, including collaborative learning, formative assessment, direct instruction, problem solving, the use of calculators and streaming. This research focuses on students in the age group spanning 5th class in primary school to 2nd year in secondary school. As part of this review Prof. Hodgen will also speak about problems faced by low -attaining students in developing their Maths understanding and the effectiveness of these teaching approaches in overcoming these difficulties.
